You Can Make a Difference

Cancer occurs in people of all ages including children. However, cancer in children is rare and is curable if detected early and treated effectively but, in most cases, detected late as a result innocent children go through painful suffering with the illness along with the treatment and yet death cannot be pushed long. Indian cancer society publishes that about 3 Lakh (0.3 million) children are diagnosed with cancer every year worldwide and nearly 50,000 thousand are in India. Whereas, WHO tells that each year about 4,00,000 children and adolescents of 0-19 years old develop cancer. If it continues, situation is going to be grim in future causing several innocent smiles crushed and families in agony. Let us pledge to irradicate childhood cancer like many other diseases with a constant support in research and awareness towards care, prevention and cure.

C3PC Research Foundation is an initiative to encourage and accelerate research towards improving the quality of lives of cancer affected or likely to get affected children and their families. In C3PC, first two ‘Cs’ are Children’s Cancer which is about childhood cancer, third ‘C’ is about Care, ‘P’ is for prevention, and last ‘C’ is for Cure.

Children's Cancer:

  • Every year, over 3 lakh children are diagnosed with Cancer all over the world.

  • In India, nearly 50,000 new childhood cancer cases occur every year.

  • In the west, the survival rate is as high as 80-90% in some cancers. With a conservative estimate of 70% survival rate, many survivors are added to population every year.

  • Cancers in childhood are best treated at pediatric cancer units by specialized disease.

  • Management groups, age group of 0-14 is considered as pediatric age group, Some centers also consider age up to 18 years.

Care:

  • Children with cancer need extra care and attention than usual children.

  • The active total care, also known as paediatric palliative care, of the cancer affected child’s body, mind and spirit, and also involves giving support to the family. It begins when illness is diagnosed, and continues regardless of whether or not a child receives treatment directed at the disease.

  • Care relieves symptoms caused by cancer and improves the quality of life of patients and their families.

Prevention:

  • Prevention is all done by early diagnosis and preauction during the pregnancy that lower the risk of childhood cancer.

  • Early diagnosis makes treatment easier and prolong the survival.

  • For early diagnosis, families/ primary care providers must be aware with the symptoms. Then, accurate and timely clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and staging, followed by access to prompt treatment.

Cure:

  • Early diagnosis comes with awareness and accessing the good medical facilities. The existing treatments do not promise a complete cure of the cancer.

  • We get to hear and read so many stories illustrating unfortunate demise resulted after battling with cancer because at some point in time during the treatment doctors run out of options and suggest best supportive care.

  • WHO says that 80% childhood cancer cases are cured in high-income countries. But, in fact, jury is out on this, as the official cancer website of the USA says that there is a significant improvement in the number of children having prognosis of 5 years survival (from 58% in mid-1970 to 87%) in the last half century. It indicates, cure is not there.

From the above facts collected from various reliable sources and witnessing live cases we deduce that in order to make our children cancer free a constant support and effort is required to fund research and awareness programs and initiatives.
